I recently met with representatives from Barclays to discuss residents’ concerns over the Orpington branch closing on 1st December.
It is regrettable that this follows a wider trend in our area since 2020, so I have been keen to ensure that residents are not unfairly impacted. That is why I wanted to see what is being offered at the Library since the Biggin Hill branch closed last year.
Barclays have made this decision following a review found reduced footfall on a daily basis. Although the majority of banking activity is now conducted online, I raised issues such as access to cash and the potential for disproportionate effects on older residents.
My concerns are tempered as there will continue to be a physical presence in the community through the ‘Barclays Local’ scheme, which will operate 4 days a week. A venue for this is still being finalised.
The Post Office will also offer everyday transactions such as processing cash deposits. Residents are also able to view an access to cash map for Orpington via the following link:
A site for the new Barclays Local service will be confirmed in due course and I will relay this as soon as I receive further details.
